From The Principals Desk
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school for Term 2! The students have settled in well after the Easter break and classes are in complete learning mode! I am always so proud of the high level of our student's engagement to learning, and this term has started in the same pleasing fashion. As with all school terms, this one is going to be another very busy one both in and out of the classroom! It is good family practice at the beginning of each term to ensure you set your children up for success at school;
- setting routines for school nights after the holiday period, regular meal times, bed times, reading time!
- organisational strategies to make sure your children have what they need and when they need it for school. Check the bag and timetable the night before and sleep easy!
- Healthy lunch boxes including fruit break, sufficient lunch and afternoon tea. Water bottle!
- Correct uniform and sufficient warm clothing as the weather gets colder - Please ensure all items are labelled with your child’s full name.
- Arrive at school before the bell, allowing students to reconnect before class begins and begin their day calmly.
Zone Cross Country - Friday 10th May
We wish our Zone Cross Country representatives all the very best as they take on runners from the other Catholic schools in our Tweed region this Friday. Consent can be provided for all selected runners through Compass as of today. May we continue to pray for fine weather on the day, and confident efforts from our St Joseph’s team! Good luck to all.
Mother’s Day - Liturgy and Afternoon Tea next Monday
While we wish all of our mothers a special day on Sunday, may we let the recognition and celebration of them all continue through Monday here at St Joseph’s. All are welcome to join us as we celebrate the blessing of our mothers.
Tell Them From Me – Parent Survey (Annual School Improvement Feedback Opportunity)
Over the next three weeks we will be inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation, improvement and planning process.
We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at St Joseph’s Primary School, South Murwillumbah.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:
http://tellthemfromme.com/stjosephsmbah24
The survey will be live from Monday 6th May - Friday 24th May
Disco - Friday 17th May
We hope to see you at our long awaited school disco on Friday of next week. Grab your dancing shoes and come along!
Peace and blessings,
Jason Clarke
Principal
Attendance
Being at school regularly helps children develop positive friendships.
School attendance is not only about academic growth but also social and emotional development. Here are several ways in which consistent attendance contributes to the formation of meaningful and supportive peer relationships:
- Shared Experiences. Regular attendance allows children to share common experiences with their peers. Being present in class provides opportunities for shared learning, activities, and interactions, fostering a sense of camaraderie.
- Consistent Social Interaction. Attending school every day provides consistent opportunities for social interaction with classmates. Regular face-to-face interactions contribute to the development of communication skills, empathy, and a sense of belonging.
Building Trust and Reliability. Being present on a regular basis helps children build trust and reliability within their peer group. Dependable attendance creates a sense of predictability, and peers can rely on each other for mutual support and collaboration.

Sharing the Gospel
Sacrament of Holy Communion
Introducing our Holy Communion candidates: Pippa, Levi, Bella, Layla, Allira, Shelby, Peggy, and Lorenzo. We have our 2024 group of young individuals continuing their journey of faith and understanding. They began their four week instruction last weekend to prepare them to receive this sacred sacrament, through learning, and spiritual growth. Let us support and encourage them as they take this important step in their faith journey.
GOD MOMENT
The SRC and all those students who helped out with our Easter Raffle last term. The amount of volunteers to help was a true testament to walking in the footsteps of Jesus.
AND
The way that St Joseph’s students participated in the cross country and encouraged each other. It was great to see everyone celebrating each other's gifts.
Mini Vinnies 2024
Mini Vinnies 2024 is gearing up with enthusiasm, brainstorming innovative ways to raise funds for St. Vincent de Paul and the community members of Murwillumbah who are facing hardships. Our first meeting last week was full of fresh, never-before-considered ideas... What an incredible group this is!
Keep your eyes on the lookout for upcoming fundraisers on Facebook, Compass, and in the newsletter.
We're always welcome new members, so if you're interested, please join us on Thursdays at Afternoon Tea in the Library!

~KINDER and YEAR 6'S NEXT TOP GROWN UP~
Kinder and Year 6 joined together to show off what they want to be when they grown up. Some of activities included:
- Using a green screen to teleport us into our dream workplace.
- Come up with a role play of what your work day will look like.
- Have a SERIOUS debate over which movie is related most to growing up (the choice was between Toy Story and Finding Nemo)...Finding Nemo won.
We had a wonderful day together and we are all looking forward to joining together again for some more fun.
When I grow up I want to be...
~ LEARNING & TEACHING IN THE R.E. CLASSROOM~
St Joseph's has embarked on innovative approaches to learning and teaching Religious Education (RE) which can transform the classroom into a dynamic space for exploration and critical thinking. One such method which begins a new unit of work, involves presenting students with challenging scenarios, objects, images, or words that push them to think beyond traditional boundaries, stimulating their curiosity and encouraging deeper reflection on RE topics. We call one component 'the Launch', which means "Launching into the learning with an out-of-the-box perspective." With this method, every student is actively engaged in the learning process, and challenged to think creatively and critically from the outset. Students predict the topic content and push each other to delve deeper.

Subway Fundraiser
We would love to express our thanks to Subway Murwillumbah for the yummy food late last term and for supporting our school in raising money for Tweed Palliative Support and Wedgetail Retreat, alongside all our students, families and teachers who donated on the day. The students were very excited and happy (as you can see).
We raised $60 from subway ordering and around $395 of cash donations from our students and families.
That is a whopping $455 raised for Wedgetail Retreat.
On behalf of Year 6 and Mr Clarke, we want to thank you again for this incredible effort.

Teacher Professional Learning
The last day of Term 1 was a pupil free day for the students at St Joseph’s Primary School. An early start to the holidays after a productive first term. Pupil free days are allocated throughout the year to allow teachers to keep up top date with their professional learning.
As you can imagine, teaching has evolved and changed so much since we were students in the primary classroom. The last day of term saw teachers learning the latest research on reading, oral language, vocabulary and comprehension.
It was designed to give teachers practical information and advice regarding effective reading instruction. When students are reading fluently – accurately, at a good pace, and with appropriate expression – they are more able to understand what they are reading. Fluency has a very strong relationship with reading comprehension.
When your child brings home a reader that seems easy for them, ask them to work on their fluency by reading it with expression multiple times. Reading with expression to your children is also a great way to develop their understanding and comprehension.
ANZAC Day 2024
Thank you, to all families who gave up their time during the school holidays to represent our school and march on this important day of commemoration.
Farewell Miss Larkham
As Miss Larkham bids us farewell, we reflect on the profound impact she has had on our school community. Her unwavering dedication, kindness, and passion for education have touched the lives of all who have had the privilege of knowing her. As she moves on to new adventures, we express our deepest gratitude and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
St Joseph's Tournament Day
Last term we were able to hold our St Joseph's Day Tournament. It was such a special day filled with fun and excitement. This day allowed the chance for all our students to be together and have a sense of being a part of a team. We watched all our students work together in their house colour teams and verse their mates, and even parents in some exciting games.
A special mention to Mrs Hughes who organised this event and our incredible House Captains who ran each game and showed incredible sportsmanship and leadership skills. Again, thank you to our teachers for helping run the games and helping make this event enjoyable for all.
After all the fun and games, it was Parker who took away the certificate with the most amount of points on the day.
Congratulations.
We also wish to extend a big thank you to all the parents and carers for joining in on the fun yesterday. It means the world to the kids.
Tournament Day Fun!
SportsNews
NSW CPS SWIMMING:
In the last two weeks of Term 1, Caleb Bourke and Carter Alexander travelled to Sydney to compete in the Polding Swimming trials. They were part of the Lismore Diocesan Swim Team and competed against students from as far north as the QLD boarder all the way down to the Sydney Harbour Bridge (which was the cut off area). This huge catchment area not only encompassed the coast but also in land, dividing the state into two areas “Polding” and “Mackillop”.
Caleb Bourke competed in the 12/13Yr 50m Backstroke swimming 41.94sec to place 10th! His time was only 4sec off 3rd place (to give an idea of how close the race was!).
Carter Alexander competed in the 8Yr 50m Freestyle swimming 36.24 sec and dropping 1.2sec off his best time to place 5th in a very close race (1sec off 3rd place and 2sec off 1st!).
Well done Caleb and Carter, it’s fantastic to see you both reaching outstanding results in the sport you train so hard for!!
POLDING HOCKEY TRIALS:
Last Friday, Violet Williams attended the Polding Hockey trials in Tamworth. She was a key member of the Lismore Diocesan Team, playing exceptionally well all day. Violet was named in the Possibles / Probables for the Polding team!! This is where they narrow the selection down from all students participating to a smaller group. Once the Possibles / Probables are named, students continue playing for another 30min or less until the final team is determined. Such a fantastic achievement to reach this stage of the selection process at Polding trials!! Well done Violet!
SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Last Thursday we finally had our School Cross Country (after two other attempts were rained out!). It was a fantastic morning filled with tough competition and great school spirit! I especially loved seeing all students giving it their best regardless of where they were placed in the field of competition and watching so many students congratulate each other as they finished.
Congratulations to the following Age Champions and Runner Up Age Champions:

She will walk the team to the showground in the morning and bring students back to school at the end of the day’s competition (approximately 1.30pm). If students wish to travel to the Showground with their parents, please let the office know so we are not waiting for you to arrive. Representative singlets will be handed out on Thursday. Remember to pack plenty of food, water and warm clothes as we will be running even if it is raining! A Compass permission request has been sent out, please approve consent as soon as possible. A timetable showing order of events is attached. Please note that times are approximate and the program will be advanced if weather threatens.
